Job Summary

A Sessional Lecturer position is available with UBC’s Faculty of Land & Food Systems from January 1 to April 30, 2023. The candidate will be expected to teach LFS 252 Land, Food, and Community: Quantitative Data Analysis (3 credits). This course involves classroom instruction and a lab. The Sessional Lecturer is responsible for delivery of course material, arranging office hours to meet with students, consultation with teaching assistants and/or markers, design and/or adaptation of questions for assignments and exams, and assignment of grades.

Qualifications

The successful candidate for this position will hold a MSc or PhD (preferred) in Statistics, Data Analysis, Economics or related areas, and have demonstrated ability to teach and manage a large class at the university level, manage graduate student teaching assistants, and have previous experience using a learning management system such as Canvas. A background in statistical analysis, preferably using the programming language of R, is required. The successful candidate will also have knowledge of applications relevant to Land and Food Systems.

August 2022 – Andrea Frommel, Chair in Sustainable Aquaculture, (right) is working with industry and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) on a new project to improve nutrition in farmed fish with the goal of reducing disease in the long-term.

As aquaculture expands there is an increasing push to reduce reliance on antibiotics and other chemicals to prevent or treat disease. The research collaborators are investigating the use of fulvic acids – compounds of soil debris present in natural aquatic environments – as a natural and environmentally sustainable method of disease prevention when incorporated as a feed supplement in juvenile aquaculture species. They will see if fulvic acids provide immune stimulation in juveniles of four local aquaculture species: chinook salmon, steelhead, sablefish and arctic char.

The project’s lead investigator is Ian Forster, Research Scientist at DFO, and includes Assistant Professor Frommel, Taplow Feeds (feed producer), and Creative Salmon, Wild West Steelhead, Golden Eagle Sablefish and DelicaSea (fish producers). The two-year project is funded by the Aquaculture Collaborative Research and Development Program.

New Frontiers Funding for COVID-19 research

COVID-19 research

August 2022 – A team of researchers is looking for a new way to treat mild COVID-19 symptoms using a nasal spray.

This new, non-invasive medical treatment could allow people to self-administer treatment at home, and reduce the need for hospitalization. Results of this study will set the stage for clinical trials.

Assistant Professor Anubhav Pratap-Singh (pictured right) is the lead investigator on this project funded by a New Frontiers in Research Fund under the stream Innovative Approaches to Research in the Pandemic Context. His team of researchers includes Anika Singh (co-PI) from BCIT, and co-applicants from UBC: Jian Feng (Forestry), Mattia Bacca (Applied Science), David Perrin (Chemistry), Ahidjo Bintou (Science), Don Sin and Andrew Thamboo (Medicine), and David Kitts (LFS).

The group aims to develop a non-invasive prophylactic therapy for SARS-CoV-2. Using the affinity between the cell receptor ACE2 and spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2, they are looking into the effectiveness of a nasal formulation as a prophylactic cure for the early symptoms of COVID. They hope to encapsulate and prolong the release of recombinant ACE2 (rhACE2) by increasing mucous membrane adhesion and the “active” residency time within the nose.

They received funding of $248,750 for the project titled, In-vitro and In-vivo trials on the aerosolized rhACE2 intranasal delivery approach for treating mild COVID-19 system patients. Additional collaborators involve researchers from Australia, Europe and the US.

The Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is seeking applications for a Sessional Lecturer position, from September 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022.

Applicants must have a Master Degree or PhD in a related field, be up to date with current business practices in the BC aquaculture industry, and have demonstrated ability to teach at the university level. Experience with organizing and supervising student projects carried out in conjunction with industry and government is an asset. The Faculty of Land and Food Systems uses student-centered learning to educate new generations of scientists equipped to solve the most fundamental issues faced by society (lfs-ps-2023.sites.olt.ubc.ca).

The successful applicant will be expected to teach a 2-credit graduate level course, AQUA 506: Business Concepts in Aquaculture. This course introduces students to general business concepts in operations and strategy, and provides students with a broad overview of marketing, competition, business strategy, operations, basic business finance, corporate social responsibility, organizational behavior and related ideas, with an emphasis on practical, real-world applications of these concepts. The Sessional Lecturer is responsible for delivery of course material, arranging office hours to meet with students, consultation with teaching assistants and/or markers, design and/or adaptation of questions for assignments and exams, and assignment of grades.

What are the highlights of your time in LFS and UBC?

June 21, 2022 – My co-op and Storm the Wall were the two most memorable experiences at UBC. Participating in the co-op program allowed me to connect the theories I learnt in class to industrial practices. It also provided me an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experiences and discover which aspects of the food industry I am most passionate about. Storming the Wall with some of my clubmates in the Vancouver rain was also super fun and something I thought I could never do nor forget.

How do you stay connected to LFS and your alumni community?

I have a small close-knit community of LFS alumni from my undergrad and graduate studies that gather regularly; in fact, some of my closest friends are my classmates! My current workplace also provides me the opportunity to stay connected to the faculty through exploring potential collaborative projects between industry and academia. I also have the pleasure of connecting with several undergraduate students through virtual coffee dates; the enthusiasm and curiosity of these intelligent students are remarkable.

What does your role at Earth’s Own involve? What new technologies are you interested in?

My role as an Innovation and Development manager involves many hats (which I love because it forces me to constantly challenge myself and stay on top of new developments in the industry). I lead the innovation, regulatory and technical support segments for the business which requires me to work closely with cross-functional teams and strategize plans. Each project comes with its own challenges, but the best part is that every day is different for me! I’m currently most interested in the technologies that can help repurpose or extract more value from by-products that are created during food production process. I want to prove that sustainability and profitability are not competing concepts and promote synergies between the two.

Can you share your top tips for finding a job in this ever-changing work environment?

Networking! This may seem very basic, but I have learnt that the food industry community in Canada is small. From personal experience, I can say that I still remember those students’ names who have spent the effort to reach out to me for coffee dates. Platforms like LinkedIn and local industry gatherings are great ways to start building new connections and developing strong communication skills and being authentic during the interactions will help you standout. I also think it is important to be specific which may mean spending the extra time to tailor your resumes to each position. For students, I can not describe how beneficial the hands-on experiences the LFS program provides are, take advantage!

And finally, what was your favorite hangout while studying at UBC? Your favorite place to eat?

I loved to study in the Ridington Room in Irving K. Barber (who doesn’t love the Harry Potter aesthetic). My favorite place to eat was Agora Café in H.R. MacMillan, I like their philosophy and the famous granola bars were the best!

A team of researchers focused on revitalizing Indigenous food systems and promoting Indigenous food sovereignty have received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The award provides $249,470 for a research project, Indigenous food sovereignty community well-being amidst a pandemic. The nominated principal investigator is Dawn Morrison with co-leaders Dr. Lisa Bourque Bearskin, Associate Professor at Thompson Rivers University and an inaugural CIHR Chairholder in Indigenous Health Research for Nursing in British Columbia, Dr. Jeff Corntassel, Associate Professor in the School of Indigenous Governance at the University of Victoria, and Dr. Hannah Wittman, Professor in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia.

The project will look at how Indigenous food sovereignty and Indigenous land based health and wellness interfaces with the medical response to COVID.

Dr. Tamara Cohen’s Nutrition and Eating Behaviour (NEB)-laboratory invites applications for a part time Research Associate (75%) with an anticipated start date of July 18, 2022. The position is located in the Food, Nutrition and Health Program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (Vancouver campus) (lfs-ps-2023.sites.olt.ubc.ca)

The NEB-Lab research program focuses on eating behaviours throughout the lifespan, with the goals of improving dietary habits. To do so, we base our research on theoretical frameworks and apply them to the nutrition / dietary context. The NEB-Lab team is also involved in creating nutrition education tools and resources with the goals of educating people about healthy eating and then assessing the tool’s impact on changing diet.

The successful candidate will (1) support the research related to the iCANPlate CIHR-funded project, including and not limited to developing methodologies for a large scale RCT to test iCANPlate and support the study’s deployment; (2) support other research activities from the Cohen lab; (3) co-supervising graduate and undergraduate students involved in all Cohen lab projects, but prioritizing those involved with iCANPlate; (4) correspond with collaborators regarding the project updates; (5) write reports and scientific manuscripts related to the projects; and (6) support grant applications.
Candidates must have a PhD in nutrition, or similar, with 5 or more years research experience in nutrition and/or dietetics. Candidates must have experience conducting randomized controlled trials, manage data collection, and demonstrated abilities in programming and data analysis. Previous experience with qualitative methodologies is required. Research experience with clinical nutritional trials is preferred.
