Racial Equity and Food Systems Resources

The Faculty of Land and Food Systems (LFS) is a diverse network of students, staff, faculty and community partnerships. In support of Black Lives Matter and #shutdownSTEM, we need to work collectively towards dismantling systems of oppression in our faculty, at UBC, and beyond. The resources below are a good start for reflecting on our own experiences and the experiences of others, and committing to addressing issues of racism and other forms of social discrimination.

Resources:

  • #ShutDownSTEM Resources
  • 21-Day Racial Equity Habit-Building Challenge – A self-guided learning journey for individuals and groups for examining the history and impacts of racism and inequities and how they are connected to our food system. The Challenge is updated every year with new daily prompts, resources and inspirational examples of dismantling racism and inequities in ourselves, our communities and our culture
  • Justice in June – A starting place for individuals trying to become better allies
  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Educational Settings, by Eboni M. Zamani-Gallaher
  • Sustainable Agriculture Education Association Equity Statement – Inspired by educators nationwide and internationally who are confronting race, class, gender, ethnic, and other social inequalities every day in their work, the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association has developed an “Equity Statement.” In many ways long overdue, it reflects the principles and practices that we as an organization support, and the ways we will support our members in equity-enhancing work
  • White Academia: Do Better, by Dr. Jasmine Roberts
  • Science Under The Scope, by Free Radicals
  • Building Inclusive AI: Strategies for Training Against Racism

If you are interested in sharing your equity-related work in LFS or curious on where to begin, reach out to Will Valley (will.valley@ubc.ca) to be part of an LFS Equity Community of Practice.
