Land conservation research funded by SSHRC Grant

July 25, 2025 – Congratulations to Joséphine Gantois who has received a SSHRC Insight Development Grant for her project titled Quantifying the Conservation Value of Land Investments using Local Ballots and Bird Outcomes. Dr. Gantois is an Assistant Professor, in the LFS Food and Resource Economics program who holds a joint appointment with UBC’s Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability.

Her research assesses the ecological footprint of humans in natural and agricultural landscapes. She combines approaches, data, and knowledge from economics and ecology, with an emphasis on causal inference, but she also applies quantitative tools such as remote sensing and machine learning, and qualitative tools such as interviews.

SSHRC Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Funding is provided for short-term research development projects of up to two years.
