Flavour of the Month: Matcha
We asked Jenny Kim, our 2024-2025 LFS|US president, for her favourite flavour! Jenny is in her final year in our Global Resource Systems (GRS) program. Read more about her highlights in LFS and top tips for new LFS students.
What is your favourite flavour and why?
Matcha! It has this earthy, slightly bitter taste that’s super refreshing.
What do you think makes the LFS community unique, and how has it influenced your leadership skills?
As cliché as it sounds, LFS really is a tight-knit community. Everyone here is genuinely supportive, and it feels like you can just be yourself. Leading within this space has definitely pushed me to be more approachable and to always prioritize community in everything I do. You learn that leadership is less about telling people what to do, and more about empowering others to step up and find their own strengths.
What are you most looking forward to as you step into the role of President of LFS|US 2024-2025?
I’m really looking forward to driving change and creating a space where every student feels like they belong. One of my main goals is to make sure we’re constantly improving the student experience – whether that’s through more inclusive events, better communication, or finding new ways for people to connect. I’m excited to work with my team to break down barriers and make the LFS community even more supportive and tight-knit. It’s going to be a year of challenging norms, bringing fresh ideas to life, and making sure we leave a lasting impact!
Do you have some top tips for new students who are just starting their journey at LFS?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! There are so many opportunities within LFS, but you have to actively seek them. Say ‘yes’ to things that scare you a little. That’s where growth happens. And remember, you’re never going through it alone! Everyone’s figuring it out just like you are.
What are your highlights of studying at LFS? Any insights and challenges you would like to share?
Like many people, I took some time to figure out what I wanted to study. I realized early on that what I began studying wasn’t the path I wanted to pursue long-term, and that was okay. The biggest insight I’ve gained is that you don’t have to have it all figured out right away. LFS gives you space to explore, and sometimes the best lessons come from the challenges and detours along the way.
And finally, where on campus, is your go-to place to eat and/or place to relax?
My go-to place on campus is Hmart! Their tuna kimbap is my favorite – it’s scrumptious and affordable. When I need to relax, I love heading over to MacInnes Field. I’ll just lay down, close my eyes for a bit, or play spikeball or frisbee with friends.
