Dean’s Message

Dean’s Message

Welcome to the 2025 spring issue of ReachOut magazine.

Dr. David Kitts, Dean pro tem

For the first time, ReachOut is available in digital form only. The online magazine has been redesigned so that you can skim the headlines or dive into a deep read easily. I hope you enjoy the new look – if you have any feedback for our editorial team, don’t hesitate to send your ideas to lfs.reachout@ubc.ca as we are always looking to improve.

This year has been one of challenges for the agri-food sector – and indeed, for the economy as a whole. With the ever-changing rules of world trade, my hope is that everyone can hold steady and support our local, and our Canadian, suppliers as much as possible. We need to build our national economy in every way possible.

In this issue of ReachOut, we hear from one of our trade economists about how the B.C. economy can manage change during these times.

We also can see how our wine scientists, specializing in yeast, are mapping the genetic traits of B.C. wines so that the industry can thrive in the long run based on our unique terrior.

We also feature the importance of farmers markets in supporting smaller, local producers, and the ways consumers can match their shared values. In another story, you can meet the new executive of the LFS Young Alumni Council – truly inspiring people who represent a bright future for LFS engagement.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue of ReachOut magazine, and I would enjoy hearing from you. You can always reach me at lfs.dean@ubc.ca.

Sincerely,

David Kitts
