FNH 480 is the final professional practice course. It is a 3-credit course focused on skill development and application for: (1) Year 5 practice education, (2) practice-based research, and (3) practice settings. The course is restricted to students with year 4 standing in the Dietetics Major.

Rationale:

The UBC dietetics professional practice courses assist students to develop communication, collaboration and professional practice skills, and prepare for the transition to the practice education component of the program (Year 5). These courses emphasize collaborative and reflective approaches, which are essential for dietetic practice. Students are graded on a pass/fail competency-oriented basis, in alignment with assessment methods used during Year 5 practice education placements.

Format:

This is a workshop and applied skills focused course. Standard class time is Wednesdays 1:00-3:50pm. The teaching and learning approaches used in this course are designed to promote learning engagement as students prepare to enter the practice environment in year 5. During the course, the instructor is expected to teach professional skills (e.g., nutrition counselling, enteral nutrition, self-reflection on learning) through applied assignments and classroom activities.

The instructor is responsible for delivery of course material, arranging office hours to meet with students, consultation with teaching assistants and/or markers, design and/or adaptation of questions for assignments and exams, and assignment of grades. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience

Minimum Qualifications:
– Master’s degree in Education or Nutritional Sciences or other related degree
– Member in good standing with the College of Dietitians of BC and Dietitians of Canada.
– Experience teaching at the university level would be an asset
