Flooding and the B.C. Farming Community
Dec. 17, 2025 – In the last few days the Fraser Valley has experienced the effects of an atmospheric river once again. There have been highway closures in the Fraser Valley and surrounding areas, and thousands of local residents have dealt with evacuations or are closely monitoring evacuation alerts.
This is disrupting our valued farming community that all of us rely upon for their essential and important role in the food system. As the farming community works hard to mitigate damages to their crops, their livestock, and their homes, we are thinking of them and send our thoughts to them. As more rainfall may come this week, we sincerely hope they can navigate any additional challenges ahead.
We hope the community receives emergency financial support in this important time and, in particular, that they receive financial commitments to build the infrastructure needed for long-term stability in the region so they can manage future extreme weather events. We recognize the commitment and financial support made in 2021 to repair damages caused by the atmospheric river in the Fraser Valley, and we encourage all levels of governments to continue working together to support farmers whose crops, livestock and market access are again impacted by this weather event.
All residents in the Fraser Valley and Washington State are showing incredible resilience and strength in this time. For the farming community impacted by floods, we thank you for everything you provide and we recognize your key role in strengthening the food system and providing for us.
