There are many ways you can financially support our Faculty, and we will work with you to find the way that best matches your situation and desire to help.
There are special tax benefits for individuals who donate appreciated stocks. These benefits make the net cost of a gift of appreciated securities significantly less than donating an equivalent amount of cash.
Planned Giving
Increasingly, donors are choosing to give at least part of their gift through their will. Bequests, charitable remainder trusts and even life insurance policies where the Faculty of Land and Food Systems is the beneficiary are possible ways of giving you may consider. See the Supporting UBC web site for details.
Gift-in-Kind
Do you have rare bottles of wine or laboratory equipment that our Faculty and students can use? Or even valuable journals or supplies? If so, then you could make a gift-in-kind donation to our Faculty. Gifts-in-kind are eligible for the same kinds of tax benefits and recognition as other gifts to UBC, however the gift must undergo an assessment procedure. Please note that all gifts-in-kind must be approved by the program or department before they are delivered to the University.
Endowments
To ensure your donation supports the Faculty in perpetuity, you may choose to support an existing endowment fund or create one of your own. An endowed investment supports the Faculty for generations and will continue to do so for as long as UBC exists. Donors endow a gift, with the intention to invest it for the long-term, generating annual income while preserving the principal of the gift. UBC remains committed to an investment strategy designed to maximize growth over time and to provide a steady, predictable stream of spendable income to the program each endowment supports. While every gift to UBC is greatly appreciated, endowed gifts have a particularly powerful and enduring impact.
Student Awards
To continue to attract and retain the best students, the Faculty of Land and Food Systems needs to build its scholarship and bursary program, especially at the graduate level. If you choose to support students directly you may do so through annual or endowed awards. You may give to an existing scholarship of bursary or decide to create your own.
Fellowships are prestigious awards of a large monetary value. These awards are usually given to students enrolled in programs at the Master's or Doctoral level, and are granted on the basis of academic excellence. A minimum of $15,000 is suggested for annual distribution.
Scholarships are monetary awards that recognize academic achievement and assist recipients with the cost of continuing their education. These merit-based awards are granted to students in programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level. By Senate regulation, scholarship recipients must be in the top 10% of their class or have obtained an average of 75% or higher. In order for an undergraduate scholarship to be meaningful, we suggest that it provide for tuition and book costs, which range from $2,500 to $5,000 a year.
Bursaries are monetary gifts provided to students to assist with expenses incurred while pursuing their academic program. Financial need is the primary consideration in the selection for bursary recipients. UBC suggests that a minimum of $1,000 a year be available for distribution.
Prizes are awarded for academic excellence or achievement in a particular subject area. Prizes usually take the form of a monetary award valued at $2,000 or less, sometimes accompanied by a medal, plaque or certificate. Some prizes are granted to students only upon graduation.
Leadership/Service Awards are monetary awards provided to both graduate and undergraduate students in good academic standing who have demonstrated excellence in a range of non-academic fields, such as community service, student leadership, volunteerism, and athletic or artistic performance. These awards are valued at $1,000 or greater.
