Typical surface
soil in good condition for plant growth consists of about half
solid material (mostly mineral, but with a critical organic
component too) and half pore spaces filled with varying
proportions of air and water. These four soil components
interact to influence numerous and complex soil functions, a
good understanding of which is essential for wise management of
our natural resources.
