UBC Centre for Aquaculture and Environmental Research (CAER)
CAER is a collaborative effort between UBC and the DFO, Canada's principal agency responsible for regulating aquaculture and the protection of the marine environment. The Centre combines a state-of-the art facility, a tradition of scientific and academic excellence, a highly technical workforce and outstanding graduate students. The CAER centre is an internationally recognized research and education facility dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable aquaculture. Some recent achievements include:
The European Union (EU) included the Centre’s AquaNet as the only non-EU member in its $42 million SEAFOODplus research project. In addition, CAE-led AquaNet research project involved the development of a risk factor model to estimate the impact of sea lice infestation from fish farms on native stocks.
Facilities
The 2,500 sq.-metre facility consists of wet and dry labs and an extensive system of water-containing vessels for fish rearing and research, as well as a wharf to dock large vessels. There are three separate water sources: seawater, surface water and groupwater, which are exploited by the extensive water extraction, treatment and delivery systems.
The laboratory includes an indoor aquarium with 186 tanks (from 50 L to 1,100 L), an indoor aquarium with 34 large and 15 small tanks. The aquarium expansion will double the indoor and outdoor holding capacity for animals, triple the marine water capacity and double the freshwater intake system.
