The University of British Columbia and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Collaborative Research, Pacific Agriculture Research Centre (Agassiz)

The University of British Columbia and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada signed a Collaborative Research agreement whereby the avian research facilities at the Pacific Agriculture Research Centre (Agassiz) are shared by the two institute.

Research Facilities:

Poultry Rearing: 

  • BCCMB Broiler Research Barn (10,000 ft2) (5000 broilers/ 5 cycles / year) 
  • Layer Barn (2,660 ft2 + 1050 ft2 work area; 2,000 laying hens in 640 cages), Environmental rooms (4 x 300 ft2) 
  • Bioassay Laboratory & Pullet Rearing (144 Bioassay Cages (2,540 ft2) + wet laboratory (900 ft2) (10-15 cycles x 1000 broilers / year), Pullet Rearing Wing (2,540 ft2) 
  • Hatchery (1 x 13,000 egg; 1 x 1,200 egg incubator / hatching capacity) 
  • Laboratories: Located in bioassay laboratory and the Main Building.

Feed Mill 

On-site feed mill for custom feed production.

Quail and Chicken Conservation (Review Avian Genetic Resource Laboratory for research program details) 

The building provides incubation, brooding, breeding and data processing facilities for a 9 strains of Japanese quail and 3 strains of chickens. The purpose of the program is for germplasm conservation, and supplying birds for teaching and research at universities and other research laboratories across Canada and the US.

The building consists of an office, a laboratory, a hatchery, a feed processing room and workshop , three cage rooms for pedigree breeding, four floor-pen rooms, and an equipment cleaning room. The animal rooms are computerized, serviced by an automatic barn-cleaning system and outside bulk-feed storage silos.
