2006: Animal Welfare and the Control of Stray Dogs in Brazil

The 2006 Peter Stratton Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada

Friday, June 9 2006, 7pm-9pm
Room 166, Macmillan Building, 2357 Main Mall, Vancouver
Refreshments to follow

For decades, Brazil has attempted to control its stray dog population mainly by trapping and euthanasia. This strategy has created unacceptable suffering to both animals and humans, and has failed to achieve effective population control. However, dog population control is still required for the purposes of both human and dog welfare. What should we do? We might begin by viewing stray dogs as our allies on the road to reaching a more desirable population equilibrium. This mind-set can lead us to control measures that are both more effective and more humane.

2005: Environmental enrichment for fish: improving welfare and survival of hatchery stock

Dr. Victoria Braithwaite

Sept. 28th, 4:30 - 5:30 (coffee and cookies from 4:15)
Room 307, Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies
University Centre, 6331 Crescent Road

Abstract: Fish populations are collapsing at unprecedented rates. Attempts to rehabilitate stocks have used ocean farming and the release of hatchery reared early life stages, but to date such programs have had little success. Released hatchery fish die younger than resident wild fish to such an extent that releases do not elevate fish biomass. A possible reason for this high mortality may be that suitable behaviour cannot develop in the artificially homogeneous hatchery environment. It is well known for intelligent species that captivity in a low-stimulus environment results in behavioural and cognitive deficits, here I will present work demonstrating that fish reared in low-stimulus environments develop similar deficits. This work also reveals that simple manipulations that create an enriched environment can generate fish with enhanced behavioural traits that can reasonably be expected to be associated with improved survival in the wild.
