EDUCATION

Graduate education is major component of the UBC Animal Welfare Program. Our students complete a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Animal Science with a specialization in Animal Welfare. Although we consider graduate applicants from a variety of disciplines, our students generally have a background in animal science, agricultural science, zoology, biology, psychology (with an emphasis on psychobiology), or veterinary medicine.

While undergraduates cannot major in the area of animal welfare, we offer courses that are open to students in any faculty.  Additionally, we encourage undergraduates that are interested in conducting original research to consider taking our 6-credit undergraduate thesis in animal welfare (AGRO 499), or contacting us about pursuing a paid, sixteen-week research project through the federal government’s NSERC USRA program. Information on undergraduate students currently working in our program may be found under “People: Undergraduate Researchers”.
