“We live in unprecedented times. Climate change, population growth, food and nutrition insecurity, water shortages – in recent years, these issues have become top of mind problems, as the impacts of these challenges are felt globally.
Over the past 100 years, the world has transformed dramatically; our Faculty has a long history and with more than a century behind us, we’ve also seen our fair share of changes. In 1914, Dr. Leonard Klinck was named the first Dean of Agriculture; in 1969, we moved from the Faculty of Agriculture to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences; in 1992, the School of Family and Nutritional Sciences, including Dietetics, became part of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences; and perhaps the biggest change of all came in 2005, when we became the Faculty of Land and Food Systems.
Through all that time we’ve remained rooted in food and agriculture while adapting to the changing needs of the world. Our Faculty prides itself on a systems approach and is uniquely positioned to deal with many of the most concerning global food systems issues. Through teaching, research, and service, we contribute to a healthier environment and a better understanding of the relationship between food, diet, nutrition, and health. As global populations become more urbanized, our urban location gives us the advantage of addressing research challenges such as how to feed expanding urban populations through high density agriculture while producing nutritious foods in a sustainable, environmentally and animal friendly manner. The diverse expertise of our Faculty, and our small size, give us the ability to capitalize on our individual strengths while working together on critical agri-food initiatives.
This action plan is our road map. The goals and action items outlined in this document will help define and focus on the Faculty’s uniqueness, while allowing us to be robust enough to meet the changing agri-food needs of the world.”
